How to apply a filter to multiple Google Photos at once

Google Photos ships with a set of one-tap filters: Vivid, Playa, Honey, Isla and the rest. They are genuinely good, and they are the fastest way to give a set of photos a consistent look. They also apply to exactly one photo at a time.

Applying the same filter across an album is the difference between a set that looks intentional and a set that looks like a camera roll.

Applying a filter by hand

1. Open photos.google.com and open a photo.
2. Click Edit, then the Filters tab.
3. Pick a filter and adjust its strength.
4. Save.
5. Open the next photo and repeat, trying to remember the strength you used.

How to apply a filter to multiple Google Photos at once

1. Install Batch for Google Photos from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Open Google Photos in Chrome and click Batch.
3. Select the album, date range or set of photos.
4. Choose Apply Filter and pick the filter you want.
5. Start the run and keep the tab open. Batch applies Google Photos' own filter to each photo in turn.
6. Review the album. Revert anything that did not suit the filter.

Choosing a filter for a whole album

• Group by light, not by day. Indoor evening photos and midday beach photos rarely want the same filter.
• Test on five photos that represent the range of the album before running all of them.
• Strong filters date quickly. A lighter touch survives longer in a family album.

Can Google Photos apply a filter to multiple photos?

Not by itself. Filters apply to the open photo. Batch repeats the same Google Photos filter across a selection.

Can I remove a filter later?

Yes. Google Photos keeps the original, so Revert to original removes the filter. Batch can revert a whole selection.

Can I mix filters in one run?

One filter applies per run. For different looks, split the photos into groups and run each group with its own filter.

Do filters change my originals?

The edit is saved over the displayed version, with the original kept by Google Photos for reverting.
