How to upscale photos in Google Photos

Google Photos has no upscale button. If you want a bigger version of an old, small or heavily cropped photo, the usual route is to download it, run it through a separate upscaler, then upload the result back. For one photo that is annoying. For fifty it is a project.

When upscaling helps, and when it does not

Upscaling is worth it when:

• The photo is small because it was cropped hard.
• It came from an older phone or a low-resolution scan.
• You want to print it, and the file is too small for the size.

It will not rescue:

• Motion blur or a missed focus. Detail that was never captured cannot be invented.
• Heavy compression artefacts, which often get bigger too.

Upscaling Google Photos in bulk with Batch

1. Install Batch for Google Photos from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Open Google Photos in Chrome and click Batch.
3. Select the photos you want enlarged.
4. Choose Upscale and pick 2x or 4x.
5. Start the run and keep the tab open. Batch creates upscaled copies and leaves your originals where they are.

Upscaling runs without sending your photos to a Batch server. The originals stay in your library, so nothing is lost if you dislike the result.

What to expect from 2x and 4x

2x is the safer choice for most photos and usually looks natural. 4x makes sense for very small source files, prints, or when a photo will be viewed large. The bigger the multiplier, the more visible any invented detail becomes, so test one photo before committing a whole album.

Upscaled copies take more storage than the originals. If storage is tight, upscale a chosen few rather than everything, and see freeing up Google Photos storage.
